DR. MRS. N. N. AKANBI AMBASSADOR AND PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE OPCW PLEDGES NIGERIA’S COMMITMENT TO THE CWC AT THE 53RD SESSION OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE OPCW HELD RECENTLY

The fifty-third session of the Executive Council took place from the 24-27 June 2008 at the headquarters of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). It was declared opened by the Chairperson of the Council Ambassador Oksana Tomova of Slovakia. During the session, various agenda items were considered and approved and there was a general debate where Regional and National papers were presented.

Dr. (Mrs.) Nimota N. Akande Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the OPCW presented a paper on behalf of the Nigerian Delegation which comprised of Ms M. Laose, Director First United Nations Department (FUND) Mrs. V. Okeke, Asst. Director (FUND) Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ms. M. Igbinobaro First secretary (Multilateral & Information) Embassy of Nigeria.

In her speech Her Excellency called for the full implementation of Article X on Assistance and Protection and Article XI on International Cooperation and Assistance. She also pledged Nigeria’s continued commitment to the primary objective of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) which is the total destruction of all Chemical Weapons Stockpiles before the stipulated deadline of 2012. She noted that the OPCW is a crucial tool for the promotion of International Peace and Security in the face of Global terrorism and insecurity.
