Maritime
Sub-Sector: Opportunities
- Liner Services - Foreign Shipping
Companies can engage in provision of Liner Services through
joint sailing agreement with Nigerian shipping companies.
- Cabotage - Which refers to movement
of light vessels between the ports of a given count Government
encourages Joint ventures in the ownership and operation of
vessels which must be fully registered in Nigeria.
- Ship Acquisition and Ship Building
Fund/Lifting of Crude Oil and Gas - Opportunities abound for
African Shipping companies and indeed all foreign shipping companies
in joint venture with Nigerians to be involved in the lifting
of Nigerian crude and take advantage of the acute shortage of
bottoms to lift cargo generated by large volume of cargo for
imports and exports.
- Pollution Control in the OilProducing
Coastal Regions Opportunities for companies to conduct surveys
and map out areas of oil spill and pollution control.
- Search and Rescue - Provision
of equipment to meet various requirements
- Training/Technical Assistance
- Provision of training facilities for a large work force indirectly
engard in the Maritime Sub-Sector.
Railway Transport
The Nigerian Railway
System is on 1067 mm guage. Technically the Nigerian Railways System
was based on the prevailing technology at its inception early in
the century. There is need for modernization and herein lies the
opportunities for investment in the sub-sector. These include:
- Conversion of Wagon bearings:
Conversion of Wagons bearings from the existing plain bearings
to Roller bearings to eleiminate frequent incidence of hot axle.
- Conversion of train braking system
from vacuum to air system: This is intended to upgrade brake
efficiency from 66% to 80%.
- Converion of AB Coupler to more
effective system: The existing AB Couplerlimits the length of
loaded trains.
- Modernization of track maintenance:
Modern maintenance system required on a scale consistent with
the size and traffic on the Nigeria Railway network
- Ticketing System: this will improve
revenue collection.
